Hello and welcome to my website. My name is Rolf, and at this point in my life I’m willing to call myself, among other, less flattering things, an artist. The name of my site reflects my feeling that two dimensional, static representations of objects or events are inherently false in a way that people often forget. What I try to do, as an artist, is observe, interpret and express. This process removes both context and movement. What’s left is a flat, isolated, static image whose purpose is to relay the details or feeling that I find interesting and wish to express to the viewer. The image is no longer “true”. I do not consider my work realism, but it is representational. I believe the psychological strength of recognizable objects – particularly the human form – allows the viewer to relate to an image in a more personal and familiar way than to something that is purely abstract. But this sort of work is challenging to produce. It demands a level of technical skill, patience and analytical thinking to produce work that purposefully exaggerates or expresses something that can be related to, while being aesthetically pleasing. This is what I strive to do. |
